Toshokan Sensou – Library Wars ep.1
April 19, 2008 at 11:04 am | In Toshokan Sensou, anime | 4 CommentsBooks. Serious fucking business.
In the world of Library Wars, the Media Improvement Act is passed by the central government, and is regarded as a need in order to promote civilness, curb public disorder and retain human rights. In order to uphold said act, agents of the committee were given great amount of power for their job, and are also backed with military support when needed. Using the excuse of preventing youths from influence by negative messages in media, all media is under tight watch by the government, and parties that exercises the right to freedom of speech are met with armed intervention.

“Oh hi, hope you like how we specially deployed a helicopter to arrest you three magazine publication directors”
As a countermeasure for this oppressive act, the local government formed their own Library Freedom Act and fought against the central government. Self-defence military forces were also formed by the local government. After 30 years of gradual intensification of the struggle, the fight became an armed conflict. Books and libraries, serious fucking business indeed!
Anyway, enter Kasahara Iku, our lovely 170cm tall female lead for the show:

Yes, at a first glance, she doesn’t look female at all. Even I was fooled into thinking she’s a male in the PV
Back then when she was in high school, she saw a fairy tale book on sale at some bookstore, that was supposedly a sequel to one that was published some 10 years ago. Excited, she wants to buy it, but…

Unfortunately for her, the agents of the committee was inspecting the shop for “offensive” books, and ordered for no book to leave the store till they’re done. Among the books the agents filtered through, that very book Iku was about to buy was also labeled as offensive. But since she loves the book so much, she decided to try sneaking her way out with the book.
What are you hiding on your back there, missy?
In a predictable fashion, she was spotted by one of the agents, who tried to forcefully take away the book that she’s clinging onto tightly. Suddenly, a high ranked member of the Kantou Library Corps appeared, and stood up for her, while shooing the agents away from the shop. He then urged Iku to buy the book, while mentioning that not all the books they inspected were really banned.

Toshokan Sensou, somesort of book crying animu ;_;
And thus, upon graduation, Iku now joins the Kantou Library Corps, after having inspired by her hero. While training at the defence military base, she has problems going along well with her instructor, Atsushi Doujou, whom she thought treated her unfairly.

Somewhere in the middle of the episode, Iku spots some fat retard who looked suspicious in the library. Trailing him, she found him attempting to cut out a bikini model poster from a library magazine that he
hid with him in the toilet.
“t-this poster! I must have…!”
The fat retard, embarrassed that he was found out, tried to lunge at Iku with the blade, of which she easily wrestled him down. Doujou dropped by to check out what’s going on, of which Iku happily announced that she knocked down the criminal, completely oblivious that the retard’s was about to punch her from the back. Doujou rushed and covered her, taking the blow to his cheek, before cuffing the fat retard, and bitchslapping Iku for not properly apprehending the criminal.
The next day, Iku and her captain took their day off shopping, and noticed a Media Improvement van outside a bookstore. Attempting to imitate her hero, she rushed into the bookstore and saw an agent trying to confiscate a book a little girl was wanting to buy:
what an ass
Iku showed off her badge, just like her savior, quoted some line from the little book of law, but was turned down by the agents, who laughed off at her lowly rank.

“why do I look so… Chinese?”
Regardless, in a typical fashion, the captain Iku was going out with a while ago called for backup, who all showed up at the critical moment, and shooed away the agents with their high ranks. Jump to a minute before the ED rolls, she receives an official letter, promoting her to the special task force.
All in all, this show really does feel original and interesting (in before “durr hurr, but it’s a ripoff of Fahrenheit 451“). I’m still wondering why none of the English subbers picked it up yet (as opposed to every fucking subbers releasing their own subbed Geass R2 episodes). I’m definitely looking forward for the next episode.
